Glaze Salon closed its doors and laid off 18 employees at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 19, when Gov. Phil Murphy ordered all barbershops and hair salons, spas, nail and eyelash salons, tattoo parlors and social clubs shut to avoid spreading the coronavirus. In the next couple weeks, co-owners Cindi Galiher and Kathy Korab received calls from customers asking for help in covering up their gray hair. The women had seen hair-color kits offered online so they took the idea and made it their own. They have sold 50 to 55 Emergency Hair Color Kits since the week of Monday, March 30. “We’re just servicing our customers that are so desperate because they’re not used to using color out of a box,” Galiher said.

Korab mixes the color according to the specifications used by the customer’s hair stylist. For a new customer, she can consult that person’s hair stylist or choose the color mix from a photo or description. The kits, which cost $30 each, contain enough color to cover the gray areas, developer, a brush and gloves.
